Miss Silver….. what a interesting hero. This hero to me immediately gave me Farrah Fawcett. Did you know Farrah Fawcett was born in Texas?! I immediately sensed the kindred spirit with this hero and the southern region of the United States. It’s just the right amount of Southern: it ain’t too honky-tonk and it ain’t too city slicker, it’s juuuuust right. I think due to her kit having a bounty hunter meets werewolf with a southern twist, we should explore, sonically, these dynamically opposing bits of Silver: the hot mess girl failure with a temper.
They’re sisters!!
I really like these two songs for Silver. The original version is by Now, Now (NN) and this version best represents her sort of every-day, vibe. I think the version by So Below (SB) is actually how she really feels. NN is a lot more hopeful and has a faster tempo, SB’s version is a lot more introspective and sullen: perhaps when Silver herself is in a drunken stupor.
I love exploring synthwave, this one by timecop1983 hits all the yummy, yummy, yummy ear food. The one verse that sells this song as being ‘this is her, Silver’
Playing games with the lawman High tailing it’s time we run Riding out in the sunset Screeching tires we hit the road Daytona by sunrise Warm liquor and dollar bills We can live by the beach side We can live in America You and me by the shore line You and me in America
The vocals are layered so beautifully together and mellifluously add to a dream like stupor. I adore the effects used especially here and in the rest of the song. I think just the general vibe of the song fits Silver, I always envisioned her having really bad relationships and situationships with men and they often end badly for her….. yet she’s always casually looking.
In the same Girl Failure1 vein, I think she also embodies a lot of Lana Del Rey songs. Ride sticks out to me, specifically the Ride music video, VISUALLY. I don’t think Silver really is as introspective and deep as Lana Del Rey is in the Ride monologue. I do, however, think she fits a lot more into Pawn Shop Blues.
Well, I pawned the earrings that you gave me Golden metal flowers dangling And I almost cried as I sold them off And I don’t mind livin’ on bread and oranges, no, no But I got to get to and from where I come And it’s gon’ take money to go
Where as Lana in this particular song becomes self-aware and sings about metaphysics, Silver does NOT hit that same level of introspection. I think Silver is stuck in Pawn Shop Blue’s first verse; however, I think her participation in The Ritual is her trying to satisfy the second verse of this song.
In the name of higher consciousness I let the best man I knew go ‘Cause it’s nice to love and be loved But it’s better to know all you can know Said it’s nice to love and be loved But I’d rather know what God knows […] I can’t do this once more No man can keep me together Been broken since I was born
Remember, if she completes The Ritual her wish comes true. I think her REAL wish is to maybe to stop running from herself or to accept herself, what she might ask from The Patrons is maybe a ‘normal’ life, whatever that entails for her. I think Silver herself is not trying to find a man or to understand God. I think her objectives are far more simple: she just wants to be stable, she’s longing either to BE a rock or HAVE a rock. A home or situation she can call her own because of her circumstances…. which I think is implied due in part with her lycanthropy and her having a difficult time controlling her other part of herself and is implied to use alcohol to dull her senses.
Game-wise, she transforms more quickly to her werewolf form when she takes damage. To me, this is an adrenaline rush and a self preservation mode and she turns into a feral beast… which causes her to perhaps regret her actions and drink to dull her guilt and to prevent herself from turning again. Perhaps her taking damage is also a metaphor for ‘bottling up your anger’ since she herself comments on her own anger. She can take and take and take up until she hits her tipping point and then the she-wolf comes out and causes destruction.
In this regard, I’d say Silver could benefit from healthy anger coping mechanisms that don’t involve substances and self-harm and a healthier self-image and self esteem!!!
What a delightful character! On the surface she seems like a Girl Failure but she’s a lot more complicated than she lets on! Perhaps that in of itself is a defense mechanism, to be unlikeable as to not have anyone to hurt!
Definitions
Girl Failure: A slang term to describe female characters who are endearingly pathetic, incompetent, clumsy, or self-sabotaging. Often considered the “anti-girlboss,” these characters are celebrated for being deeply flawed and relatable, rather than perfect or dominant.↩︎
